Cancer Patient Dental Care Restorative

Many forms of treatment for head and neck cancers affect a patient鈥檚 mouth, teeth, and salivary glands. Restoration of the dentition and supporting structures following treatment are often required to restore function, form and aesthetics.

Oral complications related to cancer treatment include:

  • Damage to the bone and tissues around the teeth resulting from radiation exposure.
  • Extraction of decayed teeth or teeth with periodontal disease before radiation treatment to minimize the risk of osteoradionecrosis of the bone.
  • Surgical removal of teeth and portions of the jaws or face due to intraoral cancers.

As each cancer treatment varies with side effects, a consultation with your dentist is needed to discuss the best dental care plan for you. Your oral health is an important part of your overall health; UT Dentistry is here to be a part of your cancer care team.
